Growing up in Angola, I witnessed firsthand the impact of poverty on individuals and communities. It’s a harsh reality that affects millions of people around the world, with devastating consequences. Poverty is not only about lacking material resources but also about living in conditions that compromise basic human needs, such as access to clean water, adequate housing, and basic health care.

As I became more aware of these issues, I felt a sense of urgency to take action and make a difference. That’s when I founded Associação Zero Angola, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable living and social progress in Angola. This is the story of my journey with the organization and the lessons I learned about the importance of sustainable living in combating poverty.

Associação Zero Angola was founded in 2018 with a focus on environmental education. Over the years, the organization expanded its mission to include health, education, sports, and women’s empowerment. Their approach is rooted in the principles of sustainability, which emphasize meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

One of the key initiatives of Associação Zero Angola is the promotion of sustainable agriculture. The organization works with local farmers to adopt practices that are environmentally friendly and economically viable. This includes using natural fertilizers, conserving water, and planting diverse crops that provide better nutrition and improve soil quality. Through these efforts, Associação Zero Angola has helped to increase agricultural productivity and income, which has had a positive impact on the livelihoods of local communities.

Water conservation

Another area of focus for the organization is water conservation. Angola is a water-scarce country, and access to clean water is a major challenge for many people. Associação Zero Angola will implement several programs to promote water conservation, such as rainwater harvesting, community water management, and water treatment. These initiatives will improve access to clean water and helped to reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases.

In addition to these initiatives, Associação Zero Angola has also developed programs to promote education, health, and women’s empowerment. The organization works closely with local schools to provide educational resources and training to teachers. They also partner with local health clinics to provide health education and access to basic health care services.

Finally, we have developed programs to empower women by providing training in business and leadership skills, promoting gender equality, and advocating for women’s rights.

My experience with Associação Zero Angola has taught me the power of sustainable living in combating poverty. By promoting sustainable agriculture, water conservation, education, health, and women’s empowerment, the organization has made a significant impact on the lives of local communities. It is clear that sustainable living is not only about protecting the environment but also about improving the quality of life for people.

As we continue to face the challenges of poverty, climate change, and social inequality, it is essential that we embrace the principles of sustainability and work together to create a more just and equitable world. Associação Zero Angola is a shining example of how sustainable living can transform communities and improve lives.
